History 7 – The Islamic Story of Prophet Muhammad

Early Life

The Islamic Story of Muhammad starts with a very poor man named Abd al-Muttalib, who would later become the Prophet Muhammad’s grandfather, in Makkah in early 6th Century AD.  Abd al-Muttalib had a dream that a crow was picking up stones with its beak, and when all the stones were gone water gushed forth.  He had a good feeling about this dream and went to the spot where the crow was and started digging.  After a while water gushed out like in his dream; this was the Zamzam well.  He turned the well into a business, and the people in the desert town started to respect him and held him in the highest esteem as water was a precious resource.  Abd al-Muttalib became rich from the well and had ten to fifteen sons.   Abd al-Muttalib married one of his sons, Abdullah, to a woman name Aminah.

Abdullah and Aminah are the parents of the Prophet.  While Aminah was pregnant with Muhammad, Abdullah contracted an illness and died.  Aminah was then left as a widow with a child to take care of by herself.  Muhammad was born in 570 AD in Makkah.

When Muhammad was either four or five years old, wet nurses from the Banu S ’ad tribe came to take children to raise for a couple years, as was the custom in those times.  When it was time to leave all the women had children, except Halima Sadia and Muhammad did not have a wet nurse.  None of the women wanted Muhammad when they found out that he had no father, they expected to be paid by the father.  Halima told her husband she did not want to go home without a child and asked if they could take little Muhammad.  Her husband agreed and they took Muhammad with them.  While living with Halima, the Prophet was happy and flourishing, as was everything else in Halima’s household, she was overjoyed by this and knew it was because of Muhammad.

When Muhammad was six years old his Aminah decided to take him to Yathrib(now known as Madinah) to visit his uncles.  The Prophet and Aminah enjoyed the pleasant climate and the company of their relatives for a month before heading back Makkah.  Unfortunately, on the way back Aminah became ill and died before they reached home.  Muhammad continued on home with his mother’s maid, Barakah.  When he reached home his loving grandfather adopted him as his own.

Muhammad lived with his grandfather, Abd al-Muttalib, for two years before he died.  When Muhammad was born his grandfather name him Muhammad because it meant “the praised one”. He knew that his grandson had great potential and was destined for greatness.  Abd al-Muttalib was never shy to show his love and pride for Muhammad.  Abd al-Muttalib took care of Muhammad for two years before dying at the age of 85.

The Prophet lived with Abu Talib for seventeen years.  At the young age of 12 Muhammad started to show interest in the trading that Abu Talib was doing.  One day when Abu Talib was heading off on one of his trading journeys to Busra, Syria, Muhammad asked if he could come along.  Abu Talib seeing his interest in trading agreed to take him along.  While in Busra a Christian scholar spotted Muhammad as the last prophet from certain signs.  He invited Muhammad and Abu Talib to dinner and informed them that Muhammad was the last prophet.  He also warned that other people might notice and try to harm Muhammad.  Abu Talib hearing this hurriedly finished his trading and rushed home with his nephew’s safety in mind.

When Abu Talib was not going on trading journeys the young Prophet would take the peoples sheep and let them graze up in the hills.  While up there he liked to be close to nature and think about life.  Later on in life he told his followers that every prophet in history was a shepherd once.

When Muhammad was fifteen years old a war broke out in Makkah between the Banu Qays tribe and the Quraysh tribe.  This war was known as the Harb al-Fujar.  The aftermath of the war left destruction and the peacefulness in Makkah was gone because it occurred during the sacred months.

The war changed everything, people used to come in thousands to see the Kabbah and many would come to trade.  The Makkans stopped being honorable and truthful, this gave the once holy city a bad name.  The Makkans agreed that they needed to fix their reputation and decided to rekindle an old pact called the Alliance of Fudul.  This pact would help the oppressed people rise up by pressuring the oppressors.  They thought that this would improve their reputation and help the Makkans have a better character.  The Prophet was there to witness the signing of the pact, he was about twenty at that time.

When the Prophet reached young manhood he already had a reputation of being a honest and hardworking, this attracted Khadija and she hired him to sell her goods in Syria.  She sent her servant Maysarah to help the Prophet on his trading expedition          Khadija was amazed that she had gotten so many goods and so much money, she never got this much before.

After the trading trip Khadija told her friend, Nafisa, about Muhammad.  Seeing how much Khadija liked Muhammad, Nafisa suggested that the two get married.  Khadija was a widow and Muhammad was of marriageable age.  Khadija liked the idea and agreed to let Nafisa be the go-between.  Nafisa asked Muhammad why he did not marry, he told her that he could not financially support a family yet.  Nafisa asked him if he would marry if that duty was lifted from him.  He asked how that would be possible.  She said that it was easy, Khadija wanted to marry him.  Muhammad was pleasantly surprised, he held Khadija in the highest esteem.  He agreed to the marriage proposal as long as his uncle, Abu Talib, agreed.  Abu Talib liked this marriage proposal and agreed.    The marriage was confirmed and the ceremony was fixed.

The Beginning of Prophethood and Challenges

After marrying Khadija, Muhammad had the chance to live like a nobleman.  Eventually the Prophet dropped all his everyday activities to go out to a mountain called Jabal al-Nur.  At the top of the mountain there was a cave known as the Cave of Hira.  In 610 AD, when the Prophet was 40 years old, he went to the cave as usual to contemplate life.  This certain day that he went to the cave was during the month of Ramadan, but no one knew yet.  Archangel Jibril (or Gabriel in English) appears to the Prophet and tells him to read.  The Prophet protested saying that he could not read.  Archangel Jibril taught him Sura al-Alaq (meaning The Clot).  These words were the first of the Revelation.

This experience left the Prophet confused and surprised, he thought that he was becoming ill or going insane.  But in those words all his questions about life had been answered.  When the Prophet came home he was shaking and scared.  Khadija was there to comfort him and put him to sleep.  Once he was asleep she went to her cousin’s house.

Her cousin, Waraqah, was a very spiritual man and Khadija trusted his judgement.  She told Waraqah about what Muhammad had said he experienced.  Waraqah said that if what she said was true, that angel must have been the same one that visited Prophet Musa(Moses) and Prophet Isa(Jesus).

Khadija took Muhammad to Waraqah one day and Muhammad told him what he had seen in that cave that day.  Waraqah immediately understood, Muhammad would be the prophet of their nation.  Waraqah realized how special Muhammad was and promised to help him in his mission.  Waraqah, unfortunately, passed away soon after.

The Prophet started to understand the meaning of what Archangel Jibril had told him.  He also realized how big his responsibility was.  Muhammad started doing dawah(inviting people to Islam) within his family.  His wife, Khadija, was the first convert.  Then his little cousin, Ali who was only ten years old at the time converted.  Then Khadija’s old slave that had been freed, Zayd ibn Haritha, and all four of the Prophet’s daughters Zaynab, Umm Kulthum, Ruaqayyah, and Fatima, and his childhood friend Abu Bakr.  Now all of the Prophet’s household was Muslim.  With the help of Abu Bakr, the number of Muslims grew into a small community.

One of the new converts named Arqam ibn al-Arqam lived far away from the rest of the houses of the Quraysh, making it the perfect place for the Muslims to meet.  His house became the first training center of Islam.  The people would meet and pray or recite whatever portions of the Quran that had been revealed at that time.  The Prophet would tell his followers to write and memorize the Quran.  He would also explain each verse so that the followers could understand what they were reciting.  Because the house was so far away from the others the Quraysh had no knowledge of what was going on.

Once a year people would gather in Makkah for Hajj.  This was the perfect time for the Prophet to try to bring people into Islam.  He would call to people, but many were stuck in the old ways, others were scared their tribe would leave them.  In those times if you did not have a tribe you would be constantly struggling to survive.

The Prophet’s tribe, the Quraysh, did not like his preachings.  They did not support him and started to mock him.  When they realized that he was not fazed they started to torture him and his followers.  Some days the Prophet would come home so injured that the next morning he could not get up to pray.  When the Muslims would pray in public and they would prostrate, people will attack them from behind.  One of the Prophet’s uncles, Abu Lahab, was one of the worst opposers of his message.  Abu Lahab and  his wife Jamila made life very hard for the Prophet.  They would throw stones at him and put thorns on the path when the Prophet would walk home.

The Quraysh tried everything to stop the Prophet from preaching.  The Quraysh tortured and abused the Prophet and his followers, many died by the Quraysh.  But the Prophet never stopped and kept on preaching patiently.  The Quraysh realized that Muhammad was protected by his uncle Abu Talib.  They told Abu Talib to stop his nephew from preaching this “false religion”.  Abu Talib was scared for his nephew’s safety and begged him to stop.  But Muhammad refused, he told his uncle that even if they put the sun in his right hand and the moon in his left he would never stop his work.  Abu Talib admired his nephew’s bravery and supported his decision.

One of the converts, Sumayyah, was the slave of Abu Jahl, one of the Prophet’s opposers.   When he found out that she had joined Islam he became furious and demanded that she abandon the faith.  Sumayyah refused, angering Abu Jahl.  He took some ropes and tied her to a pole and started flogging her.  Abu Bakr had freed many slaves that had accepted Islam and he tried to save Sumayyah, but Abu Jahl refused to sell her.  Finally, Abu Jahl had enough of Sumayyah and took her into the public square.  He asked her, in front of the people, if she would leave Muhammad’s religion.  She once again refused and Abu Jahl hit her with his spear, killing her instantly.  At that moment Sumayyah became the first martyr of Islam.

The Prophet realized that his tribe will not protect him and goes to a nearby city to ask for protection and help.  The inhabitants of the city turned him away and pelted rocks at him.

The Prophet knows that it is not safe for him or his followers in Makkah anymore.  He told his followers that they should go to Ethiopia, known as Habsha then.  In Ethiopia there was a Christian king who was right and just.

A small group of Muslims started moving to Ethiopia, this happened in the fifth year after the beginning of the revelation of the Quran.  The first group of Muslims that secretly left Makkah consisted of 11 men and five women, including the Prophet’s daughter Ruqayyah and her husband Uthman ibn Affan.  When the Makkans found out that they escaped they sent horse out to arrest them, but the Muslims were already gone.

A bigger group of Muslims escaped soon afterwards.  When the Makkans found out that another group escaped they decided to bribe Kind Negus, king of Ethiopia, to hand over the Prophet and the Muslims.  But the king refused after hearing the Prophet preach.  He knew that the Prophet was telling the truth and was a prophet like Prophet Jesus.

The Journey to Heaven

In 620 AD, Muhammad was 10 years into his prophethood had a very unique experience.  In the Quran it is referred to as al-Isra.  This incident took place after the death of Khadija, the Prophet’s first wife.

One night, the Prophet was sleeping and Angel Jibril and some other angels had come to the house and woke him up.  The angels took the Prophet to the well of Zamzam and washed him with the water.  Then they brought him a small animal that was similar to a mule, this creature is known as al-Buraq, it was white in color.  Al-Buraq flew up into the sky and brought the Prophet to Jerusalem.  The distance between Makkah and Jerusalem was 2,500 km.   The Prophet prayed at Al-Masjid al-Aqsa, which still stands today.   Angel Jibril then offered the Prophet two cups, one with milk and one with wine.  The Prophet accepted the one with milk, to which Angel Jibril said, “You preferred to be true to your nature. If you had taken the cup with wine, you would have gone against your own nature.”

Angel Jibril took the Prophet with him and flew towards the sky.  When they reached the First Sky, Angel Jibril called out to the angel that was there on duty.  The angel asked who was with Jibril and if that person was invited.  Angel Jibril said that the Prophet Muhammad was with him and that he was invited.  The angel opened a door and let them in.

The Prophet passed through all the skies meeting many prophets that came before him.  In the First Sky he met Prophet Adam.  In the Second Sky he met Prophet Isa (Jesus) and Prophet Yahya (John).  In the Third Sky he met Prophet Yusuf (Joseph).  In the Fourth Sky he met with Prophet Idris.  In the Fifth Sky he met Prophet Harun (Aaron).  In the Sixth Sky he met Prophet Musa (Moses).  In the Seventh Sky the Prophet met with Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).

After going through all the skies the Prophet saw a splendid light.  This was the Light of Allah (God).  God revealed some important commandments at that moment.  These commandments were the five daily prayers Muslims must do, the last portion of the sura al-Baqarah, and verses 27-39 of sura al-Isra.

After this the Prophet returned to Earth and entered Jerusalem.  All the prophets were gathered.  It was already dawn which meant that it was time to pray Fajr.  The Prophet led all the other prophets in prayer.  This was symbolic, the line of Prophets started with Prophet Adam and will end with Prophet Muhammad.

The Prophet then woke up in the exact place he fell asleep that night.  He told the people of Makkah his experience but they did not believe him.  They needed proof and asked the Prophet what Jerusalem looks like.  The Prophet had forgotten and asked God for help.  Angel Jibril appeared and held a map (that was only visible to the Prophet) in front of Muhammad.  The Prophet answered all their questions, but they still did not believe him.

The Migration to Medina and the Last Ten Years of his Life

Eventually, Muhammad and the remaining Muslims in Mecca were forced to leave due to the resistance they were receiving.  They migrated to Yathrib in 622 AD.  There were Jewish tribes who had long ago settled in and around Yathrib.  Gradually, the Muslim nation expanded renaming it to Medina in honor of Muhammad’s prophethood.  Medina means “The Luminous City”.

The Jewish tribes started to feel threatened by the Muslims’ presence.  They started to fight with the Muslims which resulted in them being exiled.  The Jews then asked the Meccans to become their allies and help defeat Muhammad.  The Meccans agreed to help and fought with the Jews in the Battle of Badr, The Battle of the Trench, and the Siege of Medina.  Each time Muhammad won.

In 629 AD, Muhammad led his people back to Mecca, for Hajj (pilgrimage).   The Meccans did not allow them that year, but signed a 10-year treaty with Muhammad to allow him to come the following year.  A year later (630 AD), the Meccans broke the treaty.  By this time Muhammad had all the manpower he needed and made the Meccans surrender to him.

The Muslims then took over Mecca and destroyed all the idols in and around the Kaaba.  Muhammad forgave all Meccans who conspired against him and other Muslims, and included them as equals in the Ummah (the Muslim community).

Muhammad gave his last sermon in March 632 AD during that year’s Hajj.  In June 632 AD, the Prophet died at the age of 61 in Medina after 23 years of preaching Islam.

Conclusion

The Prophet’s mission on Earth was to spread the message of the Oneness of God as had previous prophets like Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Solomon, David, etc.  The Prophet Muhammad was the last prophet God sent down to us.  He left a guide in the form of the Quran and a model of himself.  After him, us humans would have to figure out the rest ourselves until the return of Jesus.

English 7, Lesson 165 – The Old Brunson Home

“Come on Cassidy! Don’t be a baby.” Kristy yelled.  Kristy had been my best friend since first grade.  Wherever one of us went the other followed, even if that means I would be following Kristy into the creepiest house on our block.

“Come on Cassidy, there’s nothing to be afraid of.” Kristy said.

“There are tons to be afraid of.” I argued back. “We could be trespassing, there could be spiders or roaches!”

Kristy rolled her eyes and disappeared into the house. Sometimes I think that if I didn’t stop Kristy she would be dead.  I took deep breath and followed her through the doorframe and into the house.

___________________________________________________________

“Kristy?” I called out, there was no response besides my own echo.  I heard a creak from upstairs, it sounded like someone was walking.

I was going to walk up the stairs when a cold hand grabbed my arm and pulled me back.  I was going to scream but the hand covered my mouth.

“Shhhh.” It was Kristy!  “Are you going to scream?” she asked.  I shook my head slowly and she removed her hand from my mouth.

“You scared me! Why would you do that?” I whisper yelled.

“Why were you going upstairs?” she asked.

“I was looking for you!” I said. “And I heard something upstairs.”

“So you heard it too?” Kristy asked nervously.

We looked at each other nervously.  We weren’t the only people in this house and whoever was here knew that.

“Let’s get out of here.” Kristy said hurriedly.  I nodded and we ran for the door.  I grabbed the handle and tried to push the door, it wouldn’t move.

“What are you waiting for? Open the door Cassidy!” Kristy whispered.

“I can’t! It’s stuck!” I whispered back.

“Lemme try!” Kristy said as she pushed me back and tried to open the door.  It was stuck and we were stuck in the house.

“Oh no.” We said in unison.

______________________________________________________

“What do we do now?” I asked nervously.  This was all Kristy’s fault, she made us come into this stupid house, now we’re stuck.

Before she could answer we heard footsteps. It was from upstairs, and whoever was walking was coming down the stairs!  We looked at each other and ran into the kitchen.  The footsteps become louder and louder until it was right next to us.  I gasped quietly.  We listened to the footsteps come down the stairs and become distant as the person seemed to go into the living room.  I let out the breath I was holding in.  There was a long moment of silence between us.

“We should go upstairs.” Kristy said suddenly.

“What! No! That’s where the person came from, there could be more people upstairs.” I argued back.

Kristy opened her mouth to say something but the crackling of the radio in the living room interrupted her.

Attention citizens of Greendale County.  A serial killer has entered the area.  Stay in your homes and lock your doors.  Do not open your door for anyone!

The broadcast ended and the house was once again quiet.  There was a serial killer on the loose, and we were stuck in a haunted house.

_____________________________________________________

“Kristy.” I whispered.

“We’re so done for.” She said.  I whimpered slightly.  Kristy was always more brave than me, but when she said that I knew that I had a good excuse to worry.

“We should go upstairs.” I said decidedly.  Kristy looked at me like I was crazy.

“But you just said that we shouldn’t.” She argued.

“Yea, well it’s our best option.  And you’re scared, so one of us has to take the lead.” I said confidently.  Kristy smiled at me and nodded.

“Count of three we bolt.” She said.  I nodded

“One.”

“Two.”

“Three.”

We both jumped up and ran out the kitchen and up the stairs.

“Now what?” I asked when I got to the top.  I looked down the hallway nervously.  All the doors were closed, and I didn’t want to open any.

“The attic.” Kristy said decidedly, putting on her “in charge” face again.  I was relived she was in charge now, but I didn’t want to go into the attic.

“Why the attic? The attic is always haunted.” I asked.

“My Dad said that the attic is always the safest place.” She said.  I highly doubted that, but what other option did we have?

“Okay. How are we going to get up there?” I asked.  Kristy pointed to a stairwell at the end of the hall.

“Are you sure that’s goes up to the attic?” I asked reluctantly.  Kristy groaned and rolled her eyes.

“Are you going to question every idea I have or are you going to follow me?”

“Ugh, fine. But if we die I’m blaming you.” Kristy rolled her eyes again and headed down the hallway.  I followed her slowly.

When we reached the stairwell I heard the crackling of the radio again.

“Kristy, listen. There is another broadcast.” I whispered.  We both went quiet trying to hear the radio.

Attention citizens of Greendale County! We have new information about the serial killer! He has entered the town of Springfield. Police believes he is hiding in the old Brunson home. Once again please stay safe.

My eyes went wide and I gasped.

“What’s wrong Cassidy?” She asked worriedly.

“The serial killer is in the old Brunson home.” I said barley breathing.

“Okay? So?” Kristy asked, clearly confused.

“Kristy. This is the old Brunson home.”

_____________________________________________________

“We’re stuck in this house. With the serial killer?” Kristy asked.  Her voice getting higher each syllable.  She was scared, we both were.

“Let’s keep going up.” I said grabbing Kristy’s arm and pulling her up the stairs.

The attic was dark and dusty.  I started to walk towards the back to find a place to hide but stubbed my toe on a big box.

“Shh! Cassidy! That was so loud!” Kristy whispered screamed at me.

“It’s not my fault! I can’t see anything!” I retorted.

“Wait, let me find my phone.” Kristy said rummaging through her pockets.  I stared at her for a good ten seconds before I could find my words.

“You had your phone this whole time!?” I almost yelled at her.  She looked up suddenly her eyes big.

“I did. Not anymore.” She said quietly.  She looked down at her shoes while I just stared at her.  This whole time we were stuck in the stupid house she had her phone!  Kristy could have called our parents!

“What do you mean not anymore Kristy?” I asked, I could hear a dangerous edge in my voice.  Kristy gets scared when I use that edge, but this time I don’t care.

“It must have fell out of my pocket while we were running.” She said.

“If the serial killer finds it we’re dead.” I said.

Kristy just sighed and sat down on one of the nearby boxes.  How could she be so calm in this situation?  We were stuck in a house with a serial killer, and she’s just sitting and sighing!

“Why aren’t you scared?” I asked irritably.

“Because I’m not scared of every little thing.” She said, emphasizing on each word.

“Well if you just listened to me we wouldn’t be in this situation.” I replied.

“That’s just like you, to put the blame on me. You never want to take responsibility.” She said standing up from her box.

“And what exactly am I responsible for?” I asked.  Kristy closed her mouth and sat back down on the box.  That’s what I thought, she was just mad she got us into this situation.  She was the one that isn’t taking responsibility.

We sat in silence for a good 30 minutes.  Both of us were mad at each other, even though Kristy had no right to be mad at me.  She was the one that made me follow her into the house, she was the one that didn’t use her phone when she actually had it.   I always said that Kristy would be the death of me, I didn’t think it would actually come true.

_____________________________________________

It was already dark outside.  We had been hiding in the attic for at least an hour now.  I was getting cold and hungry and trying to fight back tears.  Imagining being safe at home with your parents instead of being in the cold, dusty, damp attic of a haunted house.

“One of us should probably check the radio for more updates.” Kristy said suddenly.  Her words broke the hour silence we had been sitting in.

“And who is going to do that?” I asked implying that it should be her.

“Look Cassidy, I’m sorry I got you into this mess. But we need to work together if we want to get out of here.” She said, her bossy tone was coming out.  I always hated that tone, but what she said made sense, and I really wanted to get out of here.

“Okay fine. Let’s go down together then.” I said finally.  I couldn’t see anything in the darkness, but I knew that Kristy was smiling.

We slowly got off the boxes we were sitting on and made our way to the stairs.  Each step made the old floorboards creak.  It felt like it took forever to get down those stairs.  When we finally reached the bottom we stood there, silently.  I felt Kristy take a deep breathe in, I was still mad at her, but she was my best friend.  I grabbed her hand and took deep breathe.  We slowly walked down the hallway straining our ears for any sign of movement downstairs or in the rooms.

“I can’t hear anything. Can you?” Kristy whispered.

“Nope. Maybe the killer is gone?” I whispered back.

“Not likely.” Kristy responded. “Let’s go find the radio.”

We didn’t need to find it though.  Just as she said that we heard the familiar crackle of the radio.

Attention citizens of Greendale County! Police has now confirmed that the killer is in the old Brunson Home. If you live near this home please be careful and alert. Police are going towards the sc-

The rest of the message was cut off.  Someone turned off the radio.

“What was that last sentence?” Kristy asked.

“I don’t know. But someone turned it off.” I said nervously.  We looked at each other, we both knew that the “someone” was the killer.  “I think it said something about the police coming.”

“Let’s go back to attic. We can wait until we see the police.” Kristy decided.  I nodded in agreement and we slowly walked back to the attic.

I wasn’t a pessimistic person, but what if the police never came.  What would we do then?

_________________________________________________

It was probably another hour before we saw the flashing lights of police cars.  I knew how excited Kristy was, but I don’t think she thought about how much trouble we were going to get in.  I didn’t want to pop her bubble of happiness.

“They’re here for us!” Kristy exclaimed.

“How are we going to get to them though?” I asked.

“Let’s wait until they break down the door, like in the movies!” Kristy said.  I rolled my eyes.  All I wanted to do was to see my parents again.  Meanwhile Kristy is imagining how the police officers are going to break down the door.

Suddenly there was a distant pounding, Kristy looked at me excitedly and ran out of the attic.  I jumped up and followed her.  She ran all the way down the hallway and down the stairs to the ground floor.  Just as the police smashed down the door.

“Put your hands in the air! Put down your weapons!” The police officers yelled all at once.

I immediately stopped fidgeting with my shirt and put my hands up.  Kristy on the other hand was screaming “we’re saved”.

“Put your weapons down men! They’re just kids.” A deep voice said, it was the Sheriff McGuire.

“Sheriff McGuire!” I called out.

“Cassidy?” he asked squinting his eyes to look at me.  My parents and the sheriff were friends when they were kids, the sheriff was like family. “What are you doing here?”

I looked at Kristy and smiled. “It’s a long story.” I simply said.

_________________________________________________

To Kristy’s disappointment, we never got to see the serial killer arrested.  I didn’t mind though, I wasn’t that interested to see someone get arrested.

My parents grounded me for a week, they said I shouldn’t have followed Kristy in and that I should’ve gotten an adult.  Kristy got grounded for a month and has to save up for a new phone (she never found her old one).  Everything turned out great in the end.

Moral of the story (parent’s point of view):  never go into a haunted house.

Moral of the story (my view):  always follow and protect your best friend, no matter what.

English 7 , Lesson 140 – Macbeth

Macbeth has been known was one of William Shakespeare’s darkest plays.  In this essay I’m going to tell the story of Macbeth.

The story starts at an army camp in Scotland.  The king, King Duncan, finds out that the Thane of Cawdor had betrayed him.  King Duncan sentenced the thane to death and gave the title to Macbeth, Thane of Glamis and one of his best warriors. The king sends messengers to Macbeth to tell him the good news.  Before the messengers reach Macbeth and his friend Banquo they meet three witches. One greets Macbeth as the Thane of Glamis, one greets him as Thane of Cawdor, and the third witch greets him as the next king of Scotland.  Macbeth knew that the only way he would be king, would be if King Duncan died.  He shuddered at the thought of his king’s death.  Banquo sees Macbeth’s distress and asked the witches what they say about him.  They told him that he would be the Father of Kings, and then disappeared into thin air.   At that moment the messengers reached Macbeth telling him that he was the new Thane of Cawdor and that he King had invited him and his wife to palace in Forres.  Macbeth starts to think that those witches had told him the future.

Macbeth sends a letter to his wife telling her about the witches. This is where Macbeth’s wife gets a very bad idea, just watch.  She knew, like her husband, that the only way he could become king is if King Duncan dies (you know what that means).

In the night they poison the guards, kill King Duncan, and made it look like the guards killed the king.  In the morning everyone finds the body and Duncan’s sons run in fear of their lives.  That meant that Macbeth was the only one who could fill the role of king.

When Macbeth becomes king he remembers that the witches said that Banquo was going to be the Father of Kings, (do you know what comes now?).  So he sends assassins to kill Banquo and his young son.  The assassins killed Banquo, but failed in killing his son.

Soon the whole kingdom realizes that Macbeth killed King Duncan and Banquo.  They revolt against him and end of killing him.

With Macbeth dead, King Duncan’s eldest son Malcom takes the throne.

THE END

Moral of the story, do not listen to witches and do not let power corrupt you.

English 7, Lesson 75 – The Musgrave Ritual

English 7, Lesson 75

The Musgrave Ritual

This week I got the privilege to interview the famous Sherlock Holmes about one of his more recent cases, “The Musgrave Ritual.”

Reporter: Good day Mr. Holmes, it’s a pleasure to meet you.

Sherlock Holmes: The pleasure is all mine.

Reporter: Well we heard that you have solved yet another case. Do you mind elaborating on it?

Sherlock Holmes: Of course! It all started when Reginald Musgrave came to me telling me that his butler, Brunton had disappeared.

Reporter: He disappeared!

Sherlock Holmes: Yes, yes he did. Now-

Reporter: Where did he disappear to?

Sherlock Holmes: Yes, I was just getting to that.  Mr. Musgrave had thought that his butler, well ex-butler, was snooping through his family’s records.  Like any man, he immediately fired Brunton and gave him a weeks’ notice.

Reporter: Excuse me Mr. Holmes. But Brunton has not disappeared yet.

Sherlock Holmes: Yes, yes, he was just about to disappear.

Reporter: Oh, my apologies please carry on.

Sherlock Holmes: After a couple days later Brunton disappeared. Mr. Musgrave was very concerned and confused.  He then called me to help him find Brunton again. I used common sense and logic to find out where Brunton was. Brunton asked Mr. Musgrave about height of trees before. So we went to the tallest tree on the estate and found a cellar at the foot of the tree. Inside of that cellar there was a big hole in the floor, about seven feet deep.

Reporter: Oh! What was in the hole?

Sherlock Holmes: Brunton.

Reporter: What was he doing in there?

Sherlock Holmes: We don’t rightly know he was dead. I then put the pieces together. When we told the other servants that Brunton was missing one maid was crying hysterically. I then realized that Brunton and the maid were lovers. Brunton found out about the Musgrave Ritual, where a large sum of money is passed down to each generation. He lied to the maid that he found the treasure, she became upset with him for lying to her and killed Brunton.

Reporter: My! My! How did you ever figure that out?

Sherlock Holmes: What do you mean? It’s as plain as day!  Well if you excuse me, I am a very busy man and I must get back to work. Thank you interviewing me, and good day!

Well, there you have it. That is how the famous Sherlock Holmes solved his newest case!

English 7, Lesson 135 – The Taming of the Shrew

The Taming of the Shrew starts with a drunkard name Christopher Sly who got tricked by a nobleman, he tricked Sly into thinking that he was a nobleman.  When Sly woke up the nobleman put on a play for him called “The Taming of the Shrew.”

The Taming of the Shrew” is about two daughters of a rich and powerful man named Baptista Minola.  His two daughters were Bianca Minola and Katherina (or Kate) Minola.  Bianca was the most beautiful and gentle maiden in Padua (a city in Italy).  Her older sister Katherina was considered a shrew for her temper and fast tongue.   Bianca had many suitors, while Katherina had none since no man wanted to deal with her.   Their father Baptista refused to marry off Bianca until Katherina was married.

Bianca’s suitors want to decide who gets to marry her fast, so they tell a man about Katherina and her riches. This man is named Petruchio, and he loves money.  He would be willing to marry a shrew for money.  He goes to Baptista and declares that he wants to marry Katherina.  Overjoyed, Baptista gives the couple his blessing.  But Katherina did not like Petruchio, but finally agrees to marry Petruchio reluctantly.   Now that Katherina is married, Bianca can get married.

The rest of the play is not about Bianca finding her husband, it’s about Petruchio “taming” his shrew wife Katherina.  Once married, Petruchio takes Katherina to his home and starts the “taming”.  He starts by starving her, saying that the food the servants cooked was not suitable for eating.  He then told her that the bed she was supposed to sleep in was not proper and scolded the servants all night, not letting Katherina sleep.  He did not let her have the clothes she wanted and said and did ridiculous things to “tame” her.

Finally, after the long night, Katherina and Petruchio receive invitations to Bianca’s wedding and head back to Katherina’s old house.  By this time, somehow, Katherina starts to fall in love with Petruchio.  Petruchio realizes this and tells Bianca’s new husband and another newly-wed man.  Neither believed him, so Petruchio starts a bet with Bianca’s husband.

Both men would tell a servant to call their wives.  The loser has to pay the winner 500 gold coins.  Petruchio let’s Bianca’s husband go first.  When the servant came back he said that Bianca said she was too busy.  When Petruchio sent off the servant Katherina shows up immediately.

Katherina had indeed been tamed by Petruchio and fell in love with him.  She then makes a long speech about how a woman should obey her husband.  At the end of her speech she kisses Petruchio and the play ends.

This is book was very amusing and very interesting. I highly recommend this book, this is one of the plays that Shakespeare wrote that I think anyone would enjoy. Thanks for reading!

English 7, Lesson 155 – The Odyssey

“The Odyssey” is an epic poem by Homer. This week I read Books (or chapters) 9-12 of “The Odyssey”. The story revolves around Odysseus telling the Phaeacians about his adventures.

Chapter Nine

These chapters start with Odysseus retelling his encounter with a cyclops. We find out that he was leading a failed raid on the island of Cicons.  While leaving the island Odysseus and his men get caught in a storm and end up on an island, the home of the Lotus-eaters. They gave Odysseus’s men food and water, making them just want to stay there forever and forget about everything. The men that were still sane dragged the “entranced” men back onto the ship and sailed away.  Instead of sailing back home peacefully they get caught in another storm and end up on the island of a Cyclops name Polyphemus. The men get trapped in his cave and some got eaten by Polyphemus. The remaining men came up with a plan to blind Polyphemus and escape. They executed their plan successfully and escaped the island.

Chapter Ten

Odysseus and his men make it to the island of King Aeolus, controller of wind. Aeolus was very kind and helped repair Odysseus’s ship and fed the men.  After this was done he gave Odysseus a bag of wind to send him back home, but he could not tell his men.  While Odysseus was sleeping his men got curious about the bag and opened it.  The wind bursted out and blew them back to Aeolus’s island.  They went back to Aeolus and asked for help, but they were rejected.

They sailed on, and came upon the island of the Laestrygons, where they almost got eaten by giants.  The men escaped with their lives and one ship. They ended up on the island of Circe.  Half of the remaining men are sent on an expedition to get help from Circe. They end up getting spelled into pigs.  The one man who stayed behind of the group did not get turned into a pig and raced back to the other men to tell them what had happened.   Odysseus decided to and get Circe to free the men.  While going to Circe he meets Hermes, the messenger god.  He gives Odysseus a flower that makes him be immune to Circe’s magic.  Odysseus continues on to Circe and forces her to free his men and turn them back to humans.  The men get turned back to humans and end up staying on the island with Circe for a year.

Chapter Eleven

After spending a year with Circe on her island, the men start to miss and want their home, Ithaca.  Odysseus tells Circe that his men want to go home to their families, she lets them go but tells Odysseus that he should get advice from the dead.  So the men leave and sail to the edge of the world where Odysseus makes a sacrifice and enters the Underworld.  He received advice from Tiresias (a blind prophet of the Greek god Apollo) and many other ghosts including his mother (Anticles), Achilles, Agamemnon, and other famous Greek heroes and heroines.

Odysseus, being human, can’t take the Underworld anymore and runs back to the living world.

Chapter Twelve

The ship and its crew returns to Circe’s island to rest and get supplies.  She warns them of the troubles that are ahead, like Sirens, Scylla (six headed monster), Charybdis (a monster that creates whirlpools with its mouth), and the island where the cattle of the sun are. The exact cattle that Odysseus was told to stay away from.

The men took her advice and started to sail again.  When they came upon the Sirens Odysseus plugged the men’s ears with beeswax so they would not be able to hear their song. He then had his men tie him to the mast, and told them to not untie him until they were past the island, he wanted to hear their song.

After passing the island they passed the straits where Scylla and Charybdis lived, it is said that they live on both sides of the straits.  When the ship passed them Scylla snatched six men up and ate them.

The last trial was just ahead. The men passed the island where the cattle of the sun were.  The wind started to blow them in the wrong direction and they got stuck right in front of the island, and had to stay there for a month until they finally ran out of food, and had to go on land.  When they got on land Odysseus told his men to stay away from the cattle, but one day when he was praying to Zeus for mercy his men disobeyed him and killed a cow to eat.   Finally the wind started to blow in the right direction, and Odysseus not knowing what his men did, set off and sailed away.  Soon a great big storm comes (sent down by Zeus to punish the men) and destroys the ship and all of the men, except Odysseus, drown.   Odysseus somehow makes it to the island of Calypso, a nymph like Circe.  She takes Odysseus in and fed him for seven years.

Eventually he leaves Calypso’s island and makes it to the Phaeacians.

The End

I have only read chapters nine to twelve of The Odyssey by Homer, so I do not know if Odysseus ever made it home. But chapter thirteen is titled “Return to Ithaca”.  If you want to know if he ever gets back home I suggest you read the book or Google it.  Thanks for reading!

English 7, Lesson 130 – Characters of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”

In “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” there are many characters that make up the story. In this essay I’m going to talk about some of the main characters and their parts in the story.

Tom is obviously the main character of the story. He is rough and always gets into mischief. He can be quite dramatic sometime, like acting like he is on his deathbed when he does not want to go to school, scaring Sid (his little brother), Mary (his cousin), and Aunt Polly.  Like most kids, he believes in faeries and spirits and hates school, usually playing hooky with Huckleberry Finn.

Huckleberry is the son of the town drunkard. He does not have an actual home and usually sleeps in empty pig pens. He is not daunted by his living condition and does as he pleases, sleeps late, smokes, and swears. Mothers tell their children to stay away from him, but that does not stop them from playing with him.  Tom looks up to him and is always trying to impress him.

Then there is Sid and Mary, Tom’s younger brother and his cousin.  They are the model children. Tom often gets compared to them, making him resent them.  Sid usually tells when Tom gets into trouble or does something he is not allowed to.  Mary tries hard to help Tom with his lessons and keep him out of trouble.  But no one can stop Tom Sawyer from getting into trouble.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” has many excellent characters, but these are my personal favorites. If you would like to know more about the characters I highly recommend this book.  It is full of silly boys doing silly things that get them into trouble.

English 7, Lesson 115 – Henry Bhaer

It was a peaceful Sunday evening. The past week was the best that Plumfield had in a while. Jack stayed out of mischief, Tommy didn’t get hurt besides falling into the brook a couple time. Dan tried extra hard in school, and Demi was out playing in the field all week instead of just reading.  The other boys stayed out of trouble and were well behaved all week. The girls had been playing with their dolls peacefully all week.

Mrs. Bhaer was proud of her boys and girls, and decided to allow a pillow fight that night. Pillow fights were only allowed of Saturday nights if the boys were good all week, this week they were especially good, earning them another pillow fight!

When Mrs. Bhaer told the children that tonight they were allowed to have a pillow fight they were overjoyed. The noise that they made almost made her take it back.  The boys tumbled up to the nursery to bathe. The Bhaers had never seen them bathe so quickly before!

While the older boys were bathing Nat remembered that he left his fiddle downstairs, shuddering at the thought of leaving his precious fiddle out overnight he wanted to go down to retrieve it. But it was night, after bath no one was downstairs except Mr. Bhaer in his study. Nat wanted to get his fiddle but didn’t want to go down himself, so he asked the bravest of the boys to accompany him, Tommy.  Nat would have asked Dan, but he was still bathing, so he chose the second bravest boy.

Tommy?” Nat asked meekly from the doorframe of Tommy’s bedroom.

Yea?” Tommy replied, looking up from Dan’s bug collection.

“Will you come down with me to get my fiddle please?”

“Why can’t you go yourself?

Um…I don’t wanna get eaten by monsters. And you’re the bravest boy at Plumfield! Besides Dan.” Nat said anxiously.

“Okay.” Tommy groaned getting up from his bed. “You really think I’m the bravest?”

Besides Dan.” Nat nodded.

The two boys went down the stairs and into the schoolroom as quietly as possible so the monsters wouldn’t hear them. Nat was always open about his fears. Unlike Tommy, he always said that he didn’t  believe in monsters, but being alone in the dark with nothing but shadows creeped him out.

“Quickly get your fiddle so we can go back upstairs!” Tommy whispered anxiously.

“Thomas Bangs, are you scared?” asked Nat in a mocking tone.

“No! Of course not! Only sissys are scared of the dark!” Tommy said hurriedly.

I never said anything about the dark.” Nat said grabbing his fiddle from the couch.

Tommy was going to respond, but a loud knock from the front door interrupted him. It was so loud that the whole house heard it, setting all its young inhabitants into panic. Nat dropped his fiddle on the ground making it splinter to pieces. Tommy bolted up the stairs, remembering that he left his companion downstairs in the dark went back down to bring Nat up.  Meanwhile upstairs Mrs. Bhaer was busy comforting Daisy and Rob who were so startled they started crying.

Mr. Bhaer who heard the knock, Nat dropping his fiddle, and the crying children knew that the peace that had reigned all week just ended.  The knock came again, Mr. Bhaer came out of the study just to see his wife come down the stairs.

Who could be about at this hour?” asked Mrs. Bhaer slightly annoyed. “The children were so calm. This much excitement at this hour isn’t good for growing bodies.”

Mr. Bhaer opened the door to see a large man in a big black trench coat with a tall black top hat. In his arms he had a small bundle covered up with lots of blankets and quilts.

“What can I do for you at this hour, good sir?” asked Mr. Bhaer.  The man at the door looked past Mr. Bhaer to see a small gathering of children at the foot of the stairs.

“Here.” He said briefly and handed over the bundle in his arms over to Mr. Bhaer.  Looking closer at the bundle Mr. Bhaer saw the small face of a sleeping newborn. Mrs. Bhaer who saw this too, took the small child as her husband ran after the man.

“Sir!” Mr. Bhaer called out to the man. He turned around and looked at Mr. Bhaer very seriously. “Please take your child back. This isn’t an orphanage.”

“He’s not my child.” The man replied gruffly. “He showed up at my doorstep with a note. It’s in the blankets.”  After this brief explanation the man walked off hurriedly hoping Mr. Bhaer wouldn’t chase after him again.

Stunned by what had just happened, Mr. Bhaer walked back to Plumfield.  When he got back he saw Mrs. Bhaer cuddling the small boy while reading the note in the blankets.

This is what it said :

Dear whoever this may concern,

Please take care of my dear Henry. I will come find him when I have the resources to take care of my boy.

Heartbroken by reading these words Mrs. Bhaer showed her husband the letter. He sighed deeply after reading the short letter. In all the excitement the children forgot all about their pillow fight, now they wanted to see the little baby.

“Father? What’s wrong?” asked Rob, Mr. and Mrs. Bhaers’ eldest son.

Nothing my boy.” His father replied, smiling at the little face so deeply concerned. “It is late children, time for bed, tomorrow we shall be working on more arithmetic.”

There was a collective groan at hearing the word arithmetic, but the children obeyed and trudged upstairs to bed.

Mr. and Mrs. Bhaer headed to their private study to look over the matter.

“What are we going to do Fritz?” asked Mrs. Bhaer anxiously.  Mr. Bhaer smiled slightly, he knew that his wife wanted to keep the child, but there was just no more room at Plumfield for another boy! They were already hitting capacity when Dan came along, now another child!

“My dear, I know you want to keep the child, but we haven’t got room. We don’t know where this child came from and if the mother will come looking for him.” Mr. Bhaer reasoned.

“Oh but Fritz this is a young child! He hasn’t been affected by the world yet! We could raise him from the start, as if he was Rob or Teddy! It’s a new boy who we can raise!” Mrs. Bhaer was practically begging. She saw something in the child, and she wouldn’t back down until she got her way.

I understand what you mean my dear, but this is raising another child! Teddy isn’t even five yet, are you sure we are ready to take on another child?”

Yes.” Mrs. Bhaer said firmly, and that was the end of it.

The next morning at breakfast Mr. and Mrs. Bhaer had a very important announcement to make.

“As you all remember last night we received a special little bundle.” Mr. Bhaer began. “This special bundle has joined out family! Children, say hello to Henry Bhaer.”

The children practically went into an uproar with excitement shouting out questions about this new addition to the family. Mr. Bhaer smiled, he was glad his boys were excited about the new addition.

“Before last night Mother and I didn’t know about Henry. But we have decided to adopt him and take him in as our own!” This announcement caused such uproar that people passing by on the street could hear it.

Everyone at Plumfield was overjoyed by the new baby. Except Teddy, this new child had his last name. That meant that Henry was his new brother, but that also meant that Teddy wasn’t the baby of the family anymore. Thinking this Teddy started bawling, it was so loud that all the children stopped yelling. The only noise in the room was Teddy’s crying.

“Teddy, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” Mrs. Bhaer asked.

“I not baby anymore!” Teddy sobbed.  The school almost went into another uproar of laughter, but they all felt bad for Teddy and kept their laugh in.  Mrs. Bhaer was going to console Teddy, but Rob beat his mother to it.  Rob took Teddy into the empty schoolroom and sat him down on one of the chairs.

“Teddy, don’t be a baby!” Rob said. This comment made Teddy cry even louder. So Rob tried a different way to talk to him. He wanted to console his little brother but didn’t know how to start. “Teddy, I understand.”

“No you don!” Teddy sniffled.

“Actually I do. I was your age when you were born. I was sad that I wasn’t the baby anymore.” Teddy looked into Rob’s eyes and sniffled.

“You dwid?” Teddy asked in his squeaky voice. Rob nodded earnestly.

“But then I met you, and I learned to love you. You were the cutest little baby. I was told I had to look after and protect you! It’s a lot of responsibility, but it means you’re a big boy now!” Rob knew that he got his brother. Teddy was always trying to convince the others that he was a big boy now.

Teddy stopped crying and sniffled a little. “I get to be a big boy?”

“Yup! Then all the boys will know that you’re a big boy now!” Rob said. He was glad that he got Teddy to stop crying.

“I want to be a big bwotha!” Teddy exclaimed excitedly.

Rob smiled, he had consoled his brother without his parents help!  Out in the hallway Mr. and Mrs. Bhaer was listening to the boys inside. They smiled, Rob had been raised well.

“Are you ready to be a big brother Teddy?” Mrs. Bhaer asked walking in. Teddy nodded and his mother carefully laid Henry into his arms.

“You’re a natural big brother!” Mr. Bhaer exclaimed watching how Teddy instinctively supported Henry’s head.

The rest of the day went on well. From that day on the children became quiet and calm so baby Henry wouldn’t get startled. The girls were always anxious to help take care of him, developing their housewife skills, and Plumfield had never been more orderly or quiet.

As an adult Teddy always loved telling the story of how his parents took in a baby that had been left on their doorstep and raised him as their own. Teddy loved saying how his mother saw something in Henry and how his brother comforted him. The Bhaers always enjoyed looking back on the night they gained a new addition to their big family at Plumfield.
