English 6, Lesson 95 – My Favorite Character

So far in English I’ve read 3 books, Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates, The Cat of Bubastes, and Around the World in Eighty Days. And out of the 3 books, my favorite character is Hans Brinker, from Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates.

Hans is my favorite character because he is so kind to his little sister Gretel, he took on the responsibility of man of the house at a young age, and he tries everything to help his mother, sister, and brain dead father. He is kind a humble and doesn’t complain when his homemade skates are getting to small, or when he sees the other, richer boys having fun with actual skates.

I also like Hans because he likes skating like me! And he is always looking for work or something that pays for his family. Hans is selfless and a trustworthy friend.  Hans is also very talented with wood, that’s how he helped his family stay afloat for so long.

One of the other reasons I like Hans so much his because he reminds me of my best friend Andrae, Hans is always looking out for Gretel, Andrae is always looking out for me. Hans will do anything to help his family, Andrae would do the same. Hans is talented with wood, so is Andrae (well more like sticks, but it’s still wood!).

If Hans Brinker ever came to life, I would definitely want to be his friend.

Lesson 94 Worksheet/English 6, Lesson 94

In this semester I have learned quite a bit, and in this essay I’m going to highlight some of those.

In lesson 12 we debunked myths about writing, which taught me a lot. I learned that I won’t always be in the mood to write, but I still have to, move the needle, like my dad says.  I also learned that I have to make time for rewriting and editing, a good writer needs to keep on perfecting his or hers work.  I also learned that writing isn’t a gift, anyone can do it, and you just need practice and an imagination. And, probably lots of patience.

In this semester I also learned about different sentences, which helps me be grammatically correct, which is important so you don’t created distrust in the reader, or cause chaos, or make your writing sound terrible.

I leaned about the importance of a paragraph and how to order my essays in different ways! I learned about the 8 parts of speech, direct and indirect objects, predicate adjectives, and predicate nominatives.

As you can see, in this English semester I have learned so much! Before this semester I was still struggling with what a preposition is, now, I know.

English 6, Lesson 70 – Natalie Lloyd

I’ve never understood when people say that they have a favorite author. How can you have a favorite author? You can have a favorite genre, but an author? I never understood that until I read “A Snicker of Magic”.

To be honest, the only reason that I picked “A Snicker of Magic” was because it had the word “snicker” in the title. I read a page and I immediately got sucked in. I loved “A Snicker of Magic” it was so interesting! The girl in the story, Felicity, is like me in a few ways; she loves writing, dogs, little kids, and family. She has embarrassing moment like me. Natalie Lloyd made the character so relatable that the reader could understand what Felicity was going through. The plot, the descriptions, everything about it sucked me in.

I’ve found other books written by Natalie Lloyd and I’ve loved them all. How Natalie writes is the definition of enchanting; I highly recommend her books.

English 6, Lesson 65 – How to Stay Healthy (as told to a child)

Candy, soda, chicken nuggets, fries, pizza, what do they have in common? They’re yummy! Yes, but unhealthy. Fried, greasy food isn’t good for you.

When you think about eating out what do you think of? One of the foods I listed above, right? Well those foods are unhealthy and can be harmful to your body if you eat much of it. Candy and soda has a lot of sugar and chemicals. You shouldn’t have too much off it! I’m not telling you to stop completely, just cut down, and replace candy with fruits or healthy candy. Replace soda with water or many sparkling tea if you don’t want to give up completely.

You want to eat healthy so you can grow up big and strong! And when you’re an adult you’ll be strong and healthy (so you can eat more candy!).

I’m not telling you to stop, just cut down, enjoy, but don’t overdose. Okay! Take this good advice and try to stick to it.

English 6, Lesson 50 – What I Do Afterschool

After school I have TONS of free time. In this essay you get to find out what I do afterschool.

When I finish school I have lunch and then run some errands with my dad. Sometimes we would go to the mall and window shop (or actually shop). Usually when we come home my dad would use the computer until dinner while I dance, read, write, sing, or watch TV. On Mondays, Tuesdays, and every other Fridays I have swimming classes or playdates with my other homeschooler friends!

Afterschool it’s pretty boring, sometimes I have auditions for short film roles or commercials or maybe a shoot day for a film. But most days I just chill in my room while my dad does stuff on the computer outside.

Well, that’s what I do afterschool! Hope you enjoyed!

English 6, Lesson 45 – My Favorite Hobby

People have hobbies, some have normal hobbies like reading, art, and exercise. Some people have amazing hobbies like fishing, or carving, or belly flopping! J I have many hobbies, but my favorite is dancing.

I love dancing more than my other hobbies because dance shows emotion. It gives me energy and creativity for my stories. When the music turns on it just takes over my body and by the time the song ended I’m pumped (I also have no idea what I just did)! Dancing is fun and gives me the daily exercise I need so I don’t focus all my energy on bugging my dad and mom when she comes home from work.

Well this is my essay! I know that this is a short essay, but I can’t describe what happens when the music comes on and I jump on the dance floor (aka. my bed)!

English 6, Lesson 40 – My Daily Routine

This week the essay topic is to write about my daily routine. So here it is!

When I wake up I usually grope for my phone to turn off the alarm and to check the time. Then if it isn’t 8’oclock yet I read. Usually on my I pad if the sun isn’t really out yet. Then I get up and brush my teeth. I go in to my room, change, and then I go to breakfast. After breakfast I start school.

School usually starts at 8:30 or 9ish and ends at 12. Then I go have lunch. On Tuesdays after lunch I go to a homeschooler playdate, but if it’s not Tuesday I stay home and read, dance, or write my own stories until my mom comes home from work at around 6 to 7ish.

Then we all have dinner and shower, then my parents talk a bit and I spend time with my mom while my dad has his own time and cleans the kitchen and stuff like that. Then I brush and floss my teeth set my alarm on my phone and get ready to do the whole day all over again.

Well, that’s my daily routine on the weekdays. Why don’t you talk about your weekends? Because my weekends are filled with TV, sleeping in, staying up late, and going to malls. Nothing exciting.

English 6, Lesson 35 – Laurens Boekman and the Prodigal son in Luke 15

In Hans Brinker there is a character Laurens Boekman’s story and the Parable son’s story are very similar. In this essay I’m going to show you how.

Laurens left his home because he thought that he killed someone. The Parable son took his inheritance and then ran away from home because he wanted to live lavishly.

Laurens finds an apprentice at a box factory; when his master died he took over the box factory and was quite happy. The Parable son ended up being a servant who feeds the pigs. The Prodigal son’s master starved him to the point where he was tempted to eat the food that he feeds the pigs.

Laurens returns home because he got a letter from his father saying that he wants him home again. The Parable son went home because he came to his senses that what he did was wrong. He thought that he didn’t deserve to be called his father’s son; he thought that he deserved to be one of his father’s servants, nothing more.

The one thing in both of these people’s stories that is exactly the same is how they were treated when they came home. Both their fathers embraced them and welcomed them home; not as a servant, but as a son. And they both celebrated the return of their sons.

As you can see, these stories aren’t exactly alike; just similar. I think that Laurens Boekman’s story was created around the Parable son. Don’t you?

History 6, Review Lesson 25 – The Founding of Carthage

In this essay I’m going to write about how Carthage was founded, this might be an unusually short essay, but the founding of Carthage is very simple.

Legend says that Carthage was founded in 814 BC by Elissa, better known as Dido, does that name sound familiar? Well, Dido was in the Aeneid by Virgil. Anyways, when her father died her brother became king of Phoenicia she fled. Her brother was a cruel man and a cruel king and Dido knew that he would try to kill her. So she ran to start her own kingdom on the coast of North Africa.

But, there was one problem, she didn’t have the land! So she talked to the locals and said that whatever land she could cover with the hide of a bull they would give to her. So, the locals agreed. Dido then cut up the hide into narrow strips and was able to carve out a nice sized land for her new kingdom, Carthage.

Well, this is how Carthage was founded. I know this was a short essay, but this is how Carthage was founded, a short and simple story, don’t you think?
